Imagine building a tight, elevated highway over a busy New York street, where space is confined by buildings on both sides. Such a construction project can increase public impatience as it would obstruct their daily lives and disrupt mobility. This kind of bridge construction activity occurring alongside busy New York traffic can also lead to a lot of public safety issues. Amid this complex ground, contractors are expected to deliver a quality product within the stipulated time and budget.
This is where NY-based UrbanTech Consulting Engineering excels—“We bridge the future.” As one of New York’s leading construction support and structural engineering services provider, UrbanTech is known for developing ingenious engineering solutions for the most challenging construction engineering problems.“Our overarching aim is to help contractors reduce the complexity, cost, and time of a construction project by utilizing the latest construction technology and software,” states Wei Wang, PhD, PE, Founder and CEO of UrbanTech Consulting Engineering.
From concept development to detailed designing and its implementation, UrbanTech guides its clients at every stage of the construction project. “We do not just focus on one specific area of construction support engineering like formwork or heavy lifting; we offer a full spectrum of construction services as a one-stop provider for our clients,” states Adam Goossen, PE, principal at UrbanTech.
What speaks for itself about UrbanTech’s value proposition is its esteemed clientele comprising industry bigwigs like Kiewit, Skanska, and many more. In its 20 years of experience, the company has completed several public infrastructure projects; some of them include the reconstruction of the 145th Street Bridge and the Willis Avenue Bridge over the Harlem River, the replacement of the Kosciuszko Bridge, and the raising of the Bayonne Bridge.
Another case in point, to further substantiate UrbanTech’s prowess, is the replacement of Third Avenue Bridge over the Harlem River. Working with Kiska Construction and the renowned naval architect, Greg Nordholm, UrbanTech provided engineering services related to the blue-water tow from Alabama to New York. The main swing span of the bridge was erected offsite in Alabama, where it was loaded onto an oceangoing barge, utilizing self-propelled modular transporter (SPMT) units and was towed to New York City. Before transportation, UrbanTech analyzed the barge-bridge system under anticipated loads that the bridge may encounter during the voyage. According to the analysis, the sea fastening and bridge reinforcing system was designed for 21-feet sea state. During transportation, the barge was hit by a storm with 18-feet waves. However, the bridge did not register any noticeable stress change because of the innovative 3-point hydraulic suspension design. With UrbanTech’s valuable contribution, the bridge was not only delivered safely to New York City, but the overall project was also awarded as the “Best Bridge Project” of the year in 2005.
Such a positive success story is a testament to the company’s proficiency in the construction engineering services realm. Making it all possible is UrbanTech’s talented team with a solid background in engineering intertwined with an equal measure of creativity and dedication. Alongside, a key factor that augments the company’s service excellence is its extensive investment in new construction software and technologies to decode the intricacies of building complicated structures.
Today, UrbanTech also leads the market with its design-build expertise. The company draws upon its experience with the industry’s top design organizations to create an integrated design-build solution customized to meet the goals and needs of each project. Recently, UrbanTech was part of the design-build team on the Kosciuszko Bridge replacement project in New York. Throughout the entire construction phase, UrbanTech contributed significantly to the team by developing innovative construction techniques to improve the structural design and constructability.
Striding forward, the company plans to enhance its design-build services as it is becoming the new norm of the sector. With constructional engineering continuously evolving, UrbanTech aims to keep itself up to date with industry trends and remain a leading construction engineering specialist in the U.S.
